Vietnamese police arrest 20 people in anti-China rally

Protesters hold up a Vietnamese flag (L), while others shout slogans during an anti-China demonstration in the center of Hanoi on August 5, 2012.

In Vietnam, the police have arrested at least 20 people in a protest rally against China’s territorial claims to the hotly-disputed South China Sea, witnesses say.

"There are at least 25 people here and there are arrestees elsewhere," a witness told AFP by telephone from the Loc Ha detention centre on condition of anonymity.

Another eyewitness estimated that 20 people had been detained.

The arrests were made on Sunday when demonstrators took to the streets of provincial capital Hanoi to voice protest at Beijing’s sovereignty claim over the disputed South China Sea.

During the protest, which is the fourth such rally in just over a month in Hanoi, the activists shouted, "Down with China's aggression!" and waved banners and Vietnamese flags.

The rallies happened at a time of growing tensions over the disputed waters, which are believed to hold huge oil and gas reserves.

Territorial claims, particularly regarding Spratly Islands, which are believed to have large reserves of offshore oil and gas, constitute moot points among many countries. The region is also a fishing paradise and one of the busiest sea lanes in the world.

Hanoi and Beijing both lay claim to the Paracels. Along with the Philippines, Malaysia, Brunei, and Taiwan, the two countries also claim all or parts of the Spratlys.

Relations between the two sides have soured recently, with Vietnam triggering China's fury last month after it adopted a law that put the Spratlys under Hanoi's sovereignty.
