China Dead Fish Mystery: 35-Ton Scaled Tsunami Washes Ashore

(Imaginechina via AP Images) A Chinese city awoke to 35 tons of white and yellow dead fish somehow appearing on its lake shore and which took more than 100 sanitary workers to scoop up and dispose. The incident happened last Wednesday at Haikou, on China's Hainan island, according to the local news website Hainan.net and noted by USA Today. Hainan.net said the fish were probably washed into an estuary by a tidal surge and then trapped in a pumping system that dumped them into the lake. "Residents of a Chinese city were shocked to see a vast number of dead fish appearing in a local lake yesterday," said the Daily Mail from a People's Daily report. "Horrifying images show the animals covering a large part of Hongcheng Lake in Haikou, southern China's Hainan province." The Daily Mail noted that in 2015 thousands of fish died overnight at a commercial fish farm in southern China's Guangdong province after the lake became polluted. More than 1,000 tons of dead fish were found in the water near Huizhou City. Officials claimed it was a change of salinity, not pollution, that caused the killoff in Hongcheng Lake, said the Daily Mail. "The dead fish prompted widespread public questions about pollution in the lake, but a notice from Haikou's Oceanic and Fishery Bureau said the fish died of a sudden drop in salinity in the water after they swam up into the Nandu River with the ocean's tide and entered Hongcheng Lake," said the Global Times. Jinghuan City Environment Service's department head Fan Jinghu told reporters his company was called to help after some local residents tried to scoop the fish out of the lake themselves.
