Demonstrators have taken to the streets in Vietnam’s capital, Hanoi, and Ho Chi Minh City to protest against China’s new claims to a group of islands in the South China Sea.

Police in Hanoi dispersed the protesters soon after the beginning of the demonstration on Sunday morning and arrested at least 20 people, who were marching toward the Chinese embassy.

Security forces also ordered protesters in Ho Chi City to end the protest.

Vietnam recently accused Chinese shipping vessels of cutting the cables of a Vietnamese oil exploration ship in the South China Sea.

China’s new passports containing a map, which includes the disputed waters as part of its land, have also provoked anger in Vietnam, Taiwan and the Philippines. The countries say China has violated their sovereignty.

Moreover, the governments of Vietnam and the Philippines issue visa for Chinese applicants on separate sheets of paper, refusing to stamp the new Chinese passports.

The South China Sea is a bone of contention between many countries, which make their own territorial claims, particularly the Spratly Islands, which are believed to have large reserves of offshore oil and gas. The region is also a fishing paradise and one of the busiest sea lanes in the world.

In addition, Vietnam and China both lay claim to the Paracel Islands. Along with the Philippines, Malaysia, Brunei, and Taiwan, the two countries also claim all or parts of the Spratly Islands.

In June, Vietnam adopted a maritime law, reasserting its sovereignty over the Spratly Islands and Paracel Islands.
